As the first solo spin-off from the excellent Baltimore-based R&B vocal quartet Dru Hill, Sisqo's UNLEASH THE DRAGON combines soulful singing, hip-hop beats, and solid -- even sophisticated -- dynamics. Sisqo, yeah, he's the one with the platinum-coif who resembles Rodman. Though the racy first single, "Got To Get It," posits Sisqo as an orally fixated sexpot who's so attuned to female desire he'll "kiss the lips under your navel," the record essentially uses Mary J. Blige's fine MARY as a template for remaining street and aspiring to pop. Elton John produces the sweeping "Enchantment Passing Through" while Babyface smoothes out the mid-tempo "Sexual." Throughout, Sisqo's voice is full of yearning and passion on plenty of chest-thumping sex numbers. But this is a record with upward mobility on its mind. And while it's not quite the equivalent of Lil' Kim wearing Chanel, it edges awfully close to Sisqo realizing his crossover fantasies without completely washing away the grit.
