Breakout CCM success story MercyMe had a huge crossover hit with "I Can Only Imagine," a song that resonated because its lyric, though overtly religious, touched the hearts of all who had lost a loved one. Neither the follow-up, Spoken For, nor this third album, Undone, are nearly as accessible in message. With lyrics focusing on an increasingly formulaic praise litany ("Where You lead me / I will follow...," "You are Holy / I fall down on my knees...," "You can shine on," and "Nothing else matters here / But glorifying Your name..."), MercyMe seem less interested in addressing real people and real issues than reciting Christianese. The lone exception is the closing track, "Keep Singing," which features a spare, simple piano and the impassioned vocals of Bart Millard. Like "I Can Only Imagine," the lyric is Christian-but also a heartfelt plea for help during times of trouble. While not stretching lyrically, the band flexes musically, filling out their pop melodies with lush orchestrations and beautiful arrangements. That adds a nice freshness to this release. Still, it's a shame MercyMe haven't capitalized on their newfound fame with a release more topical than Undone. Lisa Zhito, Barnes & Noble
