Editorial Reviews

Appearing three years after Mercury's comprehensive collection Fire in Your Eyes: Greatest Hits, BMG Heritage's 2004 release Ultimate Survivor edges out that previous collection for the title of the best Survivor compilation yet assembled. Why? Because the song selection and sequencing are sharper, developing a real momentum over its 18 songs, and it's also better presented, with strong liner notes and muscular remastering. Where the Mercury collection sometimes felt padded toward its end, as it emphasized some latter-day material, this focuses on the group's '80s heyday so much that it includes the original version of "Rockin' into the Night," a song Survivor leader Frankie Sullivan and his songwriting partner, Jim Peterik, gave to .38 Special, and their version is every bit as good as that group of wild-eyed Southern boys. Little touches like these make Ultimate Survivor live up to its title. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

November 09, 2005: Survivor is one of my favorite bands of all time. I wanted to rate this at 5. I am a huge Jimi Jamison fan and I really love all the vocal tracks by him. The two never before released tracks Rockin Into The Night and Rebel Girl are great songs but I don't care for Dave Bickler's vocals. This disc would have shined better if they included a new tune by the reformed Survivor with Jamison and Sullivan or a never before released track from Survivor with Jamison on vocals from 1984-1989 or even a live track. A few essential tunes are missing from When Seconds Count & Vital Signs but this is great stuff. Peterik and Sullivan are great together, I wish one day they would rejoin forces . I enjoy all of Survivor's music and any fan will love this disc. It is hard to mix the songs correctly . Bmg should have had the tunes in order from a timeline point of view. I think Survivor was much better with Jimi Jamison on vocals . There is so much punch to these tunes and inspiration just poors out with intensity.
