One who has ever traveled through the wide expanses of Norway will have to agree with me that this CD (“Twelve Moons”) is an absolute acoustic mirror image of this incomparable scenic wonder. Already, Edward Grieg elicited his Gynt Suites from this imagery. The Norwegian Jan Gabarek and his excellent group understand how to produce a colorful variegation of sounds, in a fascinating way. Those dark tonal sequences give an impression of weightlessness and great uniqueness. This is comparable to contemporary jazz, as exemplified by David Sanborn's solemn virtuosity. Therefore, “Twelve Moons” is both: an ideal companion for long journeys or rainy weekends at home.
