As overexposed as it may be (the most egregious example was an '80s television commercial for Time magazine that featured the face of Nancy Reagan), the Byrds' "Turn! Turn! Turn!" is an all but perfect pop single with an instantly memorable hook, impassioned group vocals, and Jim McGuinn's chiming Rickenbacker 12-string as the centerpiece. No wonder as perceptive a critic as Beatle George Harrison once said he was sorry for anybody who didn't buy it. The album that wrapped around the single was not quite as noteworthy as the group's hit (what could be?), but songs like "The World Turns All Around Her" and the prophetically countryish "Set You Free This Time" showed that Gene Clark's songwriting could keep pace with the band's fast-developing instrumental prowess. Perhaps the Byrds' loveliest album -- especially with the addition of seven alternate takes and bonus tracks on the 1996 CD reissue. Steve Simels, Barnes & Noble
