Editorial Reviews

Dumped on a post-Christmas/pre-New Year graveyard release date -- and, oddly, a Friday at that -- True Magic comes in a clear plastic box with no artwork, unless you count the sticker slapped onto the back. The FBI anti-piracy warning is the biggest logo on the package, and beside it, those who would like to see the credits are directed to www.mosdefmusic.com. The week the disc was released, there were no credits to be found on the site; the latest news item, in fact, was posted in early October 2005. Add to this the well-circulated rumors of Mos Def's desire to be extricated from Geffen, and the expectations are bound to be significantly lowered. No matter the circumstances, True Magic is a disappointment. There is just enough quality material ("Dollar Day," "Fake Bonanza," "There Is a Way") to make the average fan not want to wipe it memory, but the flashes of brilliance are all too scarce. It's unthinkable that Mos has nothing left in the tank for hip-hop. Here's hoping that he's saving his strength for the next release. August 11, 2009: Most hip hop enthusiasts may not always follow where Mos Def wonders. With True Magic he seems to wonder all over the map, with out a definite direction. That's not exactly a bad thing though. Mos digs deeper into a much darker, introverted space. I get the feeling that the album as a whole is something of a personal nature, maybe something he's trying to settle within himself. The only way I can describe this album is like, walking into a dark alley all murky dank and cold, then all of a sudden there is a light at the end of that alley. Finally you find day light. Hardcore Mos Def fan may have a slightly difficult time deciphering this one, non the less it will be remembered either as a slump or a underground master piece. I don't feel it's a terrible album just an odd one for even the likes of Mos Def.

March 17, 2009: When it comes to inspirational, enlightening music, Mos Def is without a doubt one of the best. As opposed to the "cool rap" that is hot in the clubs, and makes you want to dance; Mos Def's music actually has a message. Unlike most rappers, who refuse to deviate from the guns, drugs, and women; Mos Def actually attempts to better humanity through his music, insomuch that one can easliy learn simply by researching some of the topics in his lyrics. Young people (especially Blacks) need more artist like Mos Def who are not afraid to hint towards unity, rather than insisting on selfish desires.

I Also Recommend: The New Danger, Black Star, Black on Both Sides, African American History For Dummies, Roots: The 30th Anniversary Edition.
