Editorial Reviews

The soundtrack to Denzel Washington's Training Day -- which tells the story of a veteran cop (Washington) who shows a rookie (Ethan Hawke) the ropes on L.A.'s gang-filled mean streets -- houses a bevy of hot tracks from some of the best rappers in the game, including the LOX ("Dirty Ryders") and Pharoahe Monch ("F**k You"). In a rare soundtrack move, most of the rappers stick to the story line and fuel their rhymes with venom toward the police. On Gang Starr's "Tha Squeeze," Guru drops knowledge about the discriminatory justice system, while M.O.P.'s grimy guest shot on "W.O.L.V.E.S." promises Amadou Diallo-inspired retaliation against the boys in blue. These thought-provoking offerings ultimately make the remaining superstars -- such as Dr. Dre and DJ Quik (on the sex-filled "Put It on Me") and Nelly, who attacks his haters on the boastful "#1"-- sound shallow. Yet with its spirited mix of entertainment and edutainment, Training Day is still a stimulating musical exercise. Ryan Crosby Barnes & Noble
