Editorial Reviews

One of the best-selling soundtrack albums of all time, Top Gun remains a quintessential artifact of the mid-'80s. The collection's smash hits (including Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" and Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone") still define the bombastic, melodramatic sound that dominated the pop charts of the era. The 1999 expanded edition on Columbia/Legacy adds five bonus tracks: Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire," a dance mix of Kenny Loggins' "Playing With the Boys," and an instrumental by Harold Faltermeyer, who composed the movie's title theme. Also, new liner notes contain material from an interview with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. ~ Chuck Donkers, All Music Guide All Music Guide

August 24, 2008: After hearing the Top Gun soundtrack back in 1994, I went, &amp amp quot Is this a Madonna album?&amp amp quot With the exception of the great, Danger Zone By Kenny Loggins and Take My Breath Away by Berlin, much of the album sounds like ripoffs from every Madonna '80s dance hit like Into the Groove, Holiday, Borderline, and even her 1986 True Blue album! Okay, let's take a snippet from a Madonna track and make a song out of it, these artists thought when recording. Every second or third chorus of the dance numbers sounds like her stuff. Most of them sound forgettable. Now 10 million people or more might like this huge selling soundtrack, but I don't. Even playing with the Boys rips off Kenny's own hit Footloose. This is an album of complete contradictions, and you'd be better off hearing Madonna's albums than this overproduced pop junk!

April 25, 2008: Caution: Do not listen to TOP GUN soundtrack while driving. There is an automatic reaction to drive very fast! It's biological. Your right foot becomes heavier each time you play this CD. Tell the officer, "But officer, I was listening to the TOP GUN soundtrack!"
