About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

While mandolin master David Grisman and the equally talented guitarist Tony Rice may be better known in the world of bluegrass, jazz fans need to check out Tone Poems, an excellent collection of mandolin/guitar duets, performed with different vintage instruments on each track. The improvising by both men is never less than brilliant, transforming traditional folk tunes like "Grandfather's Clock" and "I Am a Pilgrim," plus the unlikely "O Solo Mio," into masterpieces. The lone track that's very familiar to jazz listeners is "Swing '42," played very convincingly by two men who are well-versed in jazz even if they don't play it exclusively. August 15, 2009: Tony Rice and Dave Grisman play vintage instruments on vintage songs. Just the two of them. Of course they are the best at what they do. So if you've ever wanted to hear what "Watson Blues" (as in Doc Watson) sounds like played on a 1943 D-18 and a Gibson F-4 from 1942, this is the album. Extensive liner notes with photos--of the instruments! And if you're not interested in hearing the sonic difference between that D-18 and the 1935 D-35 on "I am a Pilgrim", you still get to hear pretty wonderful music.
