The sinking of the luxury liner Titanic seemed like a doomed idea for stage rendering. Indeed, pundits labeled composer Maury Yeston's 1997 ensemble musical as unsailable as its 1912 namesake was pronounced unsinkable. That TITANIC went on to win the Tony Award for best musical, becoming a sizable hit, is an example of Broadway's unpredictability. More an oratorio than traditional book musical, the complex and elegant score makes for a serious and rewarding original cast album. TITANIC's creators have wisely kept their focus firmly on the ambitions and foibles of the men behind the big boat, rather than on the iceberg that eclipsed it. The prologue, "In Every Age," sets a reverent tone as the ship's passengers and crew marvel at the scope of the largest moving object ever built, while "Godspeed Titanic," "The Blame," and the farewell duet, "Still," will chill you even as they move you.
