About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Sometimes a single record can change everything, setting off larger artistic ripples than its creator ever could have predicted. This is the album that drove the revival of "culture lyrics" in mid-'90s reggae, overwhelming the sex-and-violence fetish that had previously held sway. Til Shiloh helped Buju Banton shed his limited reputation as a dance hall star with a knack for rude lyrics. The pivotal song was "Murderer," a desperate rebuke of all gunmen, written in the aftermath of fellow entertainer Panhead's shooting death. Stirring compositions like "Til I'm Laid to Rest," "Wanna Be Loved," and "Not an Easy Road" raised Buju's career to a new artistic standard and inspired countless stylistic and thematic imitators. Til Shiloh is that rare reggae album that bears repeated listening. Buju's hard core fans get plenty of raw drum and bass on cuts like "Champion" and "Only Man," but a strummed acoustic guitar and Banton's rich voice are more than enough to send "Untold Stories" to higher heights. Stars come and go in the dance hall, but seldom have hitmakers of Buju's stature transcended their own successes to truly grow and evolve. It is a sight to behold and a joyful noise not to be missed.
