Jonathan Larson was a great example of the "overnight success" who had actually been laboring for years unnoticed in the musical theater business. tick, tick...BOOM! was the musical he was working on right before he wrote Rent -- it was set aside in favor of that more famous musical. A group of former friends and collaborators of Larson's gathered to collect the drafts of the play and create a final, finished version, and in 2001, tick, tick...BOOM! opened Off-Broadway. The show, along with this recording, have helped to document another example of his talent. The lyrics may not be particularly original, but the smart urban feel and engaging characters that helped make Rent a smash are there, as well as some really stellar music. Much was made of the tragedy of Larson's death when Rent was released, but this recording makes it even more evident the kind of work that he might have continued to do if his life was not ended so prematurely. ~ Stacia Proefrock, All Music Guide All Music Guide

December 24, 2001: One can easily recognize Jonathan Larson's amazingly powerful and energetic style with all of the music in Tick, Tick...Boom. Larson had the ability to take music and transform it into pure, blazing glory and bliss for his viewer. As soon as one listens to the first track, one is engaged and ready to sit through the entire length of the cd mesmerized. Larson always had the ability to put fire in people's hearts with his music and instill some kind of motivating charge in his audience. Tick, Tick...Boom is a perfect example of Jonathan Larson's astounding capabilities as a composer in an age where Broadway began to lose touch with the American, especially the American teen. Larson with Rent and now Tick, Tick...Boom brought the American teen back to Broadway and rejuvenated a feeling that traces back from the days of Hair where teens felt emotion and spirit through music and because of music.

November 19, 2001: I've been one of the cult-like followers of Rent since the beginning, so when Tick, Tick...Boom came out (in the same off-Broadway theater where Hedwig and the Angry Inch played), I was SO excited. The songs on this soundtrack resemble those from Rent, but with a more optimistic sound... Overall, I love it, and I know any Jonathan Larson or Rent fan (or Tommy or Hair fan) will love it too.
