Spiritual leader Pir Vilayat Khan tells us that "the true healing power of sound is to be found in harmonics." Many people agree with this theory, and if you've ever been in a room while a Tibetan bowl is played, you can feel the powerful harmonics vibrate the cells of your body. This album by octogenarian and spiritual seeker Ben Scott and flautist Christa Michell presents 15 five-minute pieces that correspond to the chakras, or the main energy centers in the body according to the Eastern system. Each track is distinct in character. Some focus on the dramatic, occasionally penetrating, overtones of the bowls. "Solar Plexus Chakra" features Jonathan Goldman's guttural, Tibetan-style overtone chanting, while others layer and echo Michell's gentle flute melodies. (Michell plays many types of flutes; all tracks were recorded in one take, though echo filters were used extensively.) This is a deeply moving experience, ringing with a sincere healing spirit that's perfectly suited for meditation (especially if focusing on the appropriate chakra), massage, or dreaming.
