The smooth-as-butter vocal stylings of gospel and contemporary-Christian legend CeCe Winans are in full flower on Throne Room, the diva's newest praise release. Throne Room is divided into two parts: The first eight tracks, dubbed "Songs of Worship & Reflection," give us an easy jazz rendition of the classic hymn "How Great Thou Art" and such fine original compositions as "By Thy Blood" and the title track. The remaining eight tracks are categorized as "Songs of Praise & Adoration," and indeed, Winans beautifully conveys these sentiments on such tracks as "Mercy Said No," "All in Your Name," and "Come Fill My Heart." Winans is an enormously gifted singer who manages to convey deep emotion without resorting to vocal gymnastics or cheesy theatrics. Instead, Throne Room is both reflective and uplifting, and ably puts its listeners in a worshipful mood. Lydia Vanderloo, Barnes & Noble
