There are going to be a lot of comparisons to Coldplay, and those who make them are right, to a point. Where Coldplay tends to make an effort to emulate that indie/radiohead sound, Laswell is coming from a more humble, singer songwriter/Ryan Adams area. Some songs are simple little comforts, others are glorius anthems. Good stuff all around.

Greg Laswell has been steadily refining his sound since the unexpected success of his debut CD Through Toledo, and Three Flights from Alto Nido continues that trend. He’ s still got all the right moves, solid production, and Laswell handling most of the instruments on his own, along with solid backing from the sweet vocals of Molly Jenson. It sounds much like his previously released How the Day Sounds ep, but this time out there are also some really nice arrangements and a bit more studio production. But nice studio production can be a double-edged sword. Even if the songs sound great, the additional detail and adornment can drown out the original intent of the song. That doesn’ t seem to be the case here, however, as each song shimmers in its presentation, each gem adding up to a spectacular whole. Tracks such as “ How the Day Sounds,” and “ Comes and Goes (In Waves)” are stand-outs, but overall, Three Flights from Alto Nido is a thoroughly enjoyable album from a fine artist.
