Editorial Reviews

The first volume in the projected landmark four-CD series documenting Woody Guthrie's Folkways recordings, This Land Is Your Land presents many of the best-known songs of the man who many deem the progenitor of the 1960s urban folk song revival. The songs that appear here - - some for the first time -- have been lovingly and meticulously remastered from the frail glass and aluminum master discs of the Folkways collection now archived at the Smithsonian. Included here is the "suppressed" version of Woody's "This Land Is Your Land," which contains a lyric that might have changed the fate of this now patriotic anthem. (In the little-known verse, he adds: "There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me / And a sign was painted: said 'private property' / But on the other side, it didn't say nothin' / This land was made for you and me.") The 27-track disk, which is thoroughly and carefully documented, also contains many other Guthrie classics, including "Jesus Christ," "Jesse James," and "Sinking of the Reuben James."
