About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Expanding the epic, multi-layered sound of A Pagan Place, This is the Sea is a more ambitious yet a more successful record, since it finds Mike Scott at his melodic peak. Consequently, the album has enough strong, accessible moments to make his indulgences forgivable. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

May 03, 2003: Mike Scott found artistic gold on "This is the Sea," a nine-song gem released in 1985. The strongest tracks include "The Whole of the Moon," "Spirit," "Trumpets" and the title track. There is a haunting and timeless sound achieved on the disc, and the use of piano and horns enhances the alt-rock vibe.
