About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Expanding upon the themes of emotional and geographic isolation found in the band's previous work, This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About finds Modest Mouse mixing slow, brooding numbers such as "Custom Concern" and "Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset" with thrashing guitar workouts like "Breakthrough" and "Head South." The general mood here is one of loneliness and desperation, eloquently expressed through both the lyrics and the rhythmic, sprawling instrumentation. "Dramamine," for instance, with its driving, mid-tempo beat and ricocheting guitar line, sums up the hopelessness of a doomed relationship, while the frantic "Head South" deals with the feeling of "being ashamed of your old space." The mandolin, slide guitar, and cello featured throughout the album give the songs a certain degree of depth that makes them stand out from average indie rock fare. In general, This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About is a fine album of guitar-based rock, and Modest Mouse distinguishes itself here with songs whose meanings are simultaneously universal and painfully personal. ~ Brandon Gentry, All Music Guide All Music Guide

May 03, 2004: This album proves to be one of my more liked Modest Mouse albums. It comes off to be very emotionally deep, but this does not mean it is emo, MODEST MOUSE IS NOT EMO. Powerfully opening up with the Dramamine, featuring the great line: "We kiss on the mouth but still cough down our sleeves" and coming to an end with Talking Sh.it About A Pretty Sunset, (second to last), where Issac's voice comes in incredibly clear in the middle of the song, saying powerful things. This album is very discordinate and unkept, but in the most preciest way. A good album to think to, but as always modest mouse is. One of my better buys, most people cant grasp to the confusion, which is why Good News For People Who Like Bad News came around.

April 01, 2004: Although I must Say the album As a Whole Isnt as consistent as other Modest Mouse Albums This might contain some of their best songs. And I must disagree with People who want to label it Emo There is no other band classified as Emo that comes close to the sound, Depth and feeling of Modest Mouse Please stop lumping them with acts like Simple Plan There Is no similarity
