    Grace Potter & the Nocturnals have long been impressing crowds on the jam band, roots rock, and even jazz tour circuits, and now, with a label deal for the very first time in their lives, they finally have the opportunity to reach an even broader audience. Of course, Potter already has a pretty devout following, thanks to her richly expressive voice and the musical talents that she and her bandmembers possess, and these fans shouldn't be disappointed with This Is Somewhere, an album that, while it roots itself firmly in the Southern rock tradition, also flirts with Norah Jones-esque jazz ("Lose Some Time"), horn-driven grooves ("Mastermind"), and even pretty straightforward MOR pop ("Mr. Columbus," which, with its simple melodies and lyrics, is one of the weaker tracks on the record), in doing so creating a solid collection. Not every track here is superb -- the aforementioned "Mr. Columbus," for example, as well as "Mastermind," which is too unsyncopated and forced to pull off the frenzy of saxophones that appears -- but Potter is showing herself to be a very adept songwriter, able to convey witty irony (in "Ah Mary," an almost angry criticism of the U.S.) as well as reflections on death (coming from the perspective of an 84-year-old woman in "Big White Gate") and gentle love ("Stop the Bus") equally skillfully and avoiding many of the lyrical clichés often tied to themes of that sort. Yes, This Is Somewhere is a bit top-heavy, with most of stronger cuts tucked safely into its first half, and sometimes Potter seems to be trying a little too hard (in "Falling or Flying," for example), her Southern accent just a little too affected, but the album is still impressive, with a lot of passion, energy, and soul from a very able group of young musicians.     October 16, 2007: October 10, 2007 It's been six months since I saw Grace Potter and the Nocturnals for the first time. Since then, I've been anxiously waiting the release of their new CD "This is Somewhere""released August 7,2007". "This is Somewhere" is quite a departure from their first release the jazz/bluesy driven "Original Soul". Even after her last release "Nothing But the Water", she still shows no signs of being afraid to step outside the boundaries. With "This is Somewhere", she has taken a much more southern rock/balls to the wall approach, venturing into the politically charged songwriting of "Ah Mary", the radio pop rocker "Mr.Columbus" and the horn driven "Mastermind" But, never veering to far from their roots, with tracks like "Ain't No Time""one of my favorites" just waiting for the B-3 to kick in with Grace singing "Purple mountains majesty has turned all black and blue". Grace's vocals shine on the ever powerful moving "Lose Some Time", sucking the listener into her world. But, leaving us wondering if she is telling the story of personal experience? This CD also contains the track "Falling or Flying" from the Grey's Anatomy Soundtrack #3. The closer on the disc is my other favorite! Grace's soulful voice singing from the perspective of an 84 year old woman standing at the "Big White Gate" begging Saint Peter for forgiveness. "I ain't no holy roller but you go tell your king, that all the folks up in heaven might like to hear me sing". "This is Somewhere" shows Grace and the band progressing as songwriters. Grace, not being afraid to experiment as a lyricist. The rhythm section Bryan Dondero"Bass" and Matt Burr"Drums" always complimenting Grace's vocals and Scott's guitar with perfection. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals have come a long way in the past five years. Listening to Justin Goldberg from Indie 911, go out and tour, build your fan base across the country. After 2 years of touring and now on a major label "Hollywood Records" has definitely paid off! With three full length albums under her belt, performances on Jay Leno, Good Morning America, Late Night with Craig Ferguson and signing to Hollywood Records she has solidified herself as a major contender. "She's not going away any time soon!" As she said to me, "I'm gonna keep pushing the envelope, cuz that's what rock stars do, right?" Although, I love listening to the recordings. There is nothing like experiencing a GPN show live! So, watch for Grace and the boys rolling through your town on their big bad bus!!!
