A more versatile version of the 5 Browns, all-sibling quintet the Annie Moses Band make quite an impression with a delightfully modern classical crossover style and a beautiful mastery of their craft. Actually, by the sound of it, they can master just about any craft. Lead singer Annie (Wolaver, not Moses -- the group's namesake is actually their great-grandmother, but that's a different story) has an angelic set of pipes to match the virtuosic string play of her siblings. The quintet can thank their father Bill for his sweeping arrangements, which give the disc all the grandeur of a full orchestra. The band is at its best when it sticks to arrangements of familiar songs, like the captivating takes on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "What Child Is This." Judging by the fact that they began holding summer academies for young musicians, these guys are in it for life. And that's great news not just for their family, but for music fans everywhere.
