About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Throughout much of Blur's career, it seemed as if guitarist Graham Coxon was the driving experimental force -- the man most likely to push the envelope. It's interesting, then, that Think Tank, most of which was recorded after Coxon's departure from the band, is Blur's most adventurous outing yet. That's due in large part to what seems like a conscious decision not to "replace" the guitarist's contributions but to fill the void he left behind with other elements. For much of the disc, Alex James's bass playing is at the fore, spiking "Crazy Beat" with futuristic jitters and nudging the minimal "We Have a File on You" into Wire territory. The songs are also colored deeply by Damon Albarn's increasingly restless explorations of nontraditional and non-Western music, as he grafts Gallic-sounding strings onto the melancholy "Out of Time" and festoons "Good Song" with a sunniness that could only come from south of the equator. Even though it's difficult to trace a common thread running through Think Tank's dozen tunes, the album's adventurous spirit lends a unity that's both bracing and enthralling. November 28, 2005: A wonderfully verbose album, impregnated with loose limbed bass drones and jocularity aplenty. Blur have made better albums but it is the fact that they made this album without the brilliant Graham Coxon is even more unbelievable. Full of woolly hip hopped beats and sinous post millenial grooves, it almost out Gorillaz's Gorillaz. Albarn sounds a bit like Paul McManus, especially on the dubby "On The Way To The Club". Superb stuff.

February 02, 2005: Woohoo! Blur do it again with Think Tank, a dazzling treat that's a great pop album, albeit a pop album turned inside out and pretty weird! Eeek, shame about Crazy Beat, a catchy but uninspired single, but the other two singles, 'Out of Time' and 'Good Song', beautifully capture the spirit of this new, chilled out Blur. Without Graham Coxon, the rhythm section is given extra emphasis, and it's a treat to hear Alex James and Dave Rowntree stretch their musical muscles out a bit. 'Moroccan Peoples Revolutionary Bowls Club' is funky stuff, really sunny and fun, with quirky beats. The same goes for the bonkers 'Gene By Gene', while 'Ambulance' is one of the strongest songs Blur have delivered in a very long time. 'On the Way to the Club' is dominated by chilly, beautiful synths: the ending to this song is absolutely fantastic. 'Sweet Song' is beautiful, very mellow and very tender. 'Battery in Your Leg' is the one song here to feature Coxon before his departure, and it's a pretty closer to a lively, engaging and fresh sounding album.
