THE WILD PARTY -- Joseph Moncure March's 1928 narrative poem about Prohibition-era Manhattan -- provided the inspiration for two stage musicals this year. This version, composed by Michael John LaChiusa (MARIE CHRISTINE), features a superb ensemble that includes Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense") in a stunning Broadway debut, the versatile Mandy Patinkin, Tonya Pinkins (JELLY'S LAST JAM), and the legendary Eartha Kitt. With both THE WILD PARTY and 1999's MARIE CHRISTINE earning Tony nominations for LaChiusa this year, the songwriter consolidates his preeminence over other Broadway tunesmiths with his sophisticated, tuneful, and character-driven scores. Using jazz age, burlesque and vaudeville themes as jumping-off points, THE WILD PARTY is a completely satisfying affair that's often as dark, explosive, and exciting as the real-life Roaring Twenties it depicts.
