About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

The Coasters were the 1950s' (and early rock's) dominant novelty/comic R&B ensemble, benefiting from Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's lyrical wit and inspired production. They weren't simply proficient clowns; the Coasters were a skilled vocal unit whose talents were utilized on slice-of-life narratives, prophetic youth manifestos, and even an occasional teen anthem, as well as the prototype humorous vehicles "Yakety Yak" and "Poison Ivy." Although Rhino has already given them the deluxe two-disc treatment, consumers who either don't want that much Coasters material or prefer only the hits are nicely served by this 18-track anthology. It contains every major release, plus valuable lesser-known selections such as "Shoppin' for Clothes" and "What About Us." Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

April 09, 2005: the Coasters derived from the vocal group, the robins who recorde riot in cell block # 9 and smokey joe's cafe. Carl Gardner and a friend left the robins with jerry leiber and Mike Stoeller. (song writing duo) for New York to become the coasters, the kingpins of doo wop, and the clowns of rock. on this Cd they include two of their hits with the robins. (the 2 mentioned earlier.) The y also include all the Coasters major hits such as yaketyt yak, charlie brown. (a humourous song about the loveable comic strip character.) The CD also includes two minor coasters songs, shoppin' for clothes, and what about us.
