About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Arising out of the Harvard Square folk scene of the early '60s, Tom Rush wrapped his intimate, gravelly voice around the songs of Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell (her unsentimental breakup song, "Urge for Going," is included here) when they were just a couple of unknown Canadians playing for tips. Drawing from the blues ("Mobile-Texas Line" which shows off Rush's guitar power), the broadside tradition ("Galveston Flood"), and the best of contemporary songwriters (Jackson Browne's "Jamaica Say You Will"), Rush has explored the every facet of the folk scene through his three-decade-plus career. He's evolved into a songwriter of vision himself -- James Taylor, Garth Brooks, and Emmylou Harris have named his work influential in their musical careers. Listen to the mystical imagery of "The Dreamer," or the vivid landscape-framed emotional portraits in "River Song," a new cut recorded especially for this collection with backing vocals from Shawn Colvin and Mark Cohn. Tom Rush's career continues to flourish as his musical vision continues to evolve. Kerry Dexter, Barnes & Noble
