Rhino/Elektra Tradition's The Very Best of Shirley Murdock is an excellent 16-track retrospective of her recordings for Elektra in the late '80s. This contains seven of the nine songs on her eponymous debut (or eight of 13, if you count the remixes on the record, one of which is here [the "midnight mix" of "As We Lay"]), three songs from her second album, A Woman's Point of View, and three from her third record, Let There Be Love. For good measure, "Computer Love," the Zapp song she sang on and co-wrote, is also here, along with an extended mix of "Go On Without You" from a promotional 12-inch single. All of this is tied together by classy packaging and fine notes by David Nathan, making this a fine overview of her hit-making peak. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
