Editorial Reviews

RCA Victor's 2002 The Very Best of James Galway is a comprehensive overview of James Galway's prolific career, touching not only on his easy listening pop crossover tunes, but his classical pieces. In fact, it does something very clever: it devotes a disc, a full half of the collection, to his classical works, with the second disc to his smooth, lovely covers of pop hits. This way, the full scope of Galway's talents are showcased on one compilation, but they're also kept separated, so you can hear one side or the other, depending on mood. Some may find a certain favorite or two missing, but overall, this is an excellent summation of Galway's RCA recordings, which did find him at a peak. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Very Best of James Galwayby Stacey_Foreman

September 13, 2009: James Galway plays the tracks on this CD flawlessly and exactly as the composers intended for them to be played. His execution comes with zero error. His musicianship is well demonstrated in the track Concertino where he tempers originality to allow for authenticity and so takes a slower approach here and plays the piece to its intended potential. He uses a variety of different techniques which make this CD original and fun. His techniques allows for 100% clarity and definition and his breathing technique is something I noted because it allows for a full, complete and smooth sound, a perfectly defined rollover to each note played. I have recommended another CD of his below (with Claude Bolling) where he plays with a different style (a rendition of a Rampal favorite) with a touch of Latino culture.

I Also Recommend: O'Reilly Street.
