Editorial Reviews

Consider this collection of mostly well-known classics to be comfort food for your ears. Even folks who don't know much about classical music will probably recognize Pachelbel's Canon, Bach's "Air on the G String," Saint-Saëns' "The Swan," and the Andante from Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21, especially since many of them have been featured in films. Yet there are a few nice surprises, too. Peter Warlock's "Capriol" Suite and Gerald Finzi's Romance for Strings may not be standard fare, but these lovely, lyrical works are easy on the ears. Of course, the exquisite performances by Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields don't hurt, either. In fact, The Ultimate Relaxation Album provides marvelous interpretations all around, including Jean-Yves Thibaudet's golden-toned pianism in the famous 18th Variation from Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, the gentle pluck of Eduardo Fernandez's guitar in a Largo by Vivaldi, and the songful strains of Julian Lloyd Webber's cello in a Nocturne by Borodin -- all perfect accompaniments for a candlelit reverie or an intimate dinner for two.
