About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Released after Gastr del Sol's last album, Camoufleur, The Thicket takes the slanted, minimal songwriting Grubbs explored with the band's early releases into his own hands, making the album the first under his name that seems to reflect his main thrust in songwriting. Unsurprisingly, The Thicket trades many of the abstract instrumental qualities of Grubbs' other work for an almost singer/songwriter feel -- its songs are, at the core, rustic, country-tinged constructions of acoustic guitar, with a much stronger vocal presence than before. With Grubbs' always-keen sense of interesting arrangements and instrumentation, The Thicket stands as a polished and fully realized example of this vein of Grubb's songwriting.
