Editorial Reviews

A music primer that’s as enjoyable as it is edifying, The Story of the Blues brings together exemplary tracks from a roster of significant artists stretching back to Blind Willie McTell and Charley Patton and forward to Bob Dylan and Keb' Mo', touching on such icons as Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, and Muddy Waters along the way. Acoustic and electric, folk blues, urban blues, blues-rock, and more -- all the major variations of the genre are touched upon. The vitality and power of this music, one of American’s prime cultural treasures, cuts straight across time; the oldest performances are just as powerful and immediate as the more contemporary ones. A classic collection when it was originally released in the 1970s, the 2003 edition has been expanded with a few additional tracks. Steve Futterman, Barnes & Noble

January 15, 2005: This IS a great collection. I just wish they hadn't taken off 2 of my very favorite tracks from the original collection: Elmore James' "Sunnyland Blues" and Otis Spann's "Bloody Murder." They were the last two tracks on the original, and seem to have disappeared here.
