Editorial Reviews

This two-fer compiles two Beefheart albums originally released in 1972. The Spotlight Kid was a stripped-down, slide-guitar-filled move toward Beefheart's beloved Delta blues, dark in outlook and more traditional in approach, although it was still distinctly Beefheart's take on the blues. Clear Spot was more typical of Beefheart's earlier work with the Magic Band, although it too was musically simpler, as well as thematically brighter. Steve Huey, All Music Guide

May 24, 2003: I don't like a couple of these songs,(Crazy Little Thing and Low Yo Yo Stuff). But the rest of these two cds is great. Clear Spot has a great combination of almost radio friendly music and classic Beefheart. He really plays with his blues touches here. Even his most tender songs (My Head is My Only House Unless it Rains, Her Eyes are a Blue Million Miles) are absolutely great. Big Eyed Beans from Venus is fantastic. Click Clack and Grow Fins are two of my other favorites. I don't understand why this music isn't standard music being played on classic rock radio stations. Why didn't people buy this stuff when it was new? Come on world open your ears.
