About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

The addition of the more technically gifted guitarist Marc Ford and a full-time organist gives the Black Crowes room to stretch out on The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, perhaps the band's finest moment. Using Rich Robinson's descending chord progressions as a base, the band grooves its way through a remarkably fresh-sounding collection of Faces-like rockers and ballads, tearing into the material with flair and confidence and really coming into its own as a top-notch rock & roll outfit. But while the focus is undeniably on the band's musical chemistry, Southern Harmony also boasts a strong collection of songs, striking a perfect balance between the concise Shake Your Money Maker and their later, more jam-oriented records. While there aren't as many obvious singles as on their debut album, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion is the best expression of the Crowes' ability to take a classic, tried-and-true sound and make it their own. [The CD reissue appended a pair of bonus tracks: a "Slow" version of "Sting Me," and "99 Lbs."] Steve Huey, All Music Guide

November 26, 2007: This, their second album, is where the Crowes really took off as a real-deal, deep, soulful and well-rounded rock 'r roll band... The addition of Eddie Harsch on keys, and especially Marc Ford on guitar, really added a lot to the Crowes already great sound...these additions added a lot of muscle to their sound... if you listen to Shake Your Money Maker, and then this album, the presence of Marc Ford on guitar on this album is unmistakable right from the first song, "Sting Me" - about half way through this song, M. Ford introduces himself to Crowes listeners by tearing off a show-stopping, record-stopping solo that is unforgettable - check out this solo on live versions of the song, particularly the one from "Freak 'N Roll Into The Fog" - it's even more scorching live - what an immense talent and musical personality he is - his departure from the Crowes (again) is very unfortunate... anyways, great album... make sure to check out Thorn in My Pride, an incredible song, among others...just put this album on and let it play straight through ...excellent.

September 21, 2004: I can't believe no one has reviewed this album! I've owned this cd for over 10 years and have never gotten tired of listening to it. The songs are fantastic and the music is great. Excellent subtle guitar work, especially in the slower songs. This cd stands above all the others (with Amorica being second).
