About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Habitués of Toronto's more unconventional art galleries, the Hidden Cameras stage colorful live shows replete with dancers in animal costumes and handmade scenery -- but the real story is their chiming pop, which packs an unexpected poetic punch. While many musically akin artists -- such as the Magnetic Fields, Belle & Sebastian, or the ever-repressed Morrissey -- float gay themes beneath the surface of their songs, the Hidden Cameras distinguish themselves by addressing homosexuality directly. "Ban Marriage" critiques gay unions; "Smells like Happiness" paints a portrait of gay life through various odors; and "Shame" finds lead shutterbug Joel Gibb empathizing with a gay man who hates his feminine qualities. Musically, Gibb's band is a bit more subtle, building on the Velvet Underground fixations of their contemporaries with quietly strummed and picked guitars, a sweet string section, handclaps, and the occasional drum machine. So while the literature majors among Gibb's fans will happily dissect his lyrics for recurrent themes -- in addition to animals and smells, they'll find mentions of blindness, bodily fluids, and religion -- the rest of us will revel in the tuneful sense of freedom that resonates through The Smell of Our Own.
