A succession of taut rockers and introspective ballads, Code 90's budget-priced reissue of Marc Bolan's finest boogie bristles with power and excitement, a solid 16-track reminder of the year in which T. Rex could do no wrong. Whether stalking the ballrooms with amps on stun or reveling in the otherworldly wordiness that rounds up some of Bolan's most eternal lyricism, The Slider is both Marc Bolan's most electrifying album and his most personal. "Ballrooms of Mars" and "Spaceball Ricochet," in particular, evoke candid memories of Bolan at his most absolutely vulnerable, while "Metal Guru," the chart-topping follow-up to "Telegram Sam," stands as both the archetypal T. Rex single and the most triumphantly flamboyant, opening the album with a yell of pure joy before slamming into a lyric whose buoyant nursery rhyme quality seriously belied its content. Three bonus tracks, period B-sides "Cadillac," "Thunderwing," and the stupendously sauntering "Lady," complete the package and, if you've somehow managed to avoid owning this album in the past, the price ensures that you now have no choice.
