The Pretenders burst on the scene in the early '80s with one of the most compelling presentations of rock & roll ever seen. This collection, which highlights their A and B sides up until the mid-'80s, shows that Chrissie Hynde and co-conspirators were true masters of the rock single. Tracks such as "Brass in Pocket," "Middle of the Road," and the highly underrated "Message of Love" are spectacularly performed, written, and produced. The early band, especially with James Honeyman-Scott's hook-laden guitar playing, was capable of miracles, and you'll find examples of that on virtually every cut. Matthew Greenwald, All Music Guide

December 15, 2007: In my book, The Bachelors Bible, I named Chrissie Hynde as the best female pop-rock vocalist of all time because of her unique style, incredible songwriting ability, and ability to interpret and express her own lyrics as well as those of others. Whether they're doing a Sonny and Cher song [I Got You Babe with UB40], or a Kinks classic [Stop Your Sobbing],the Pretenders always find the best way to deliver the song with just the right amount of soul, edginess, and emotion without going over the line becoming trite or sappy. 2000 Miles is one of the only Christmas songs [along with Father Christmas] that doesn't make me want to hurl. When she origionally recorded Brass In Pocket she said she really didn't like it and thought no one would understand the British slang, but the song was so catchy and infectious that no one even cared what she was singing. Stop Your Sobbing is one of the best pop rocks songs of all time. Talk of the Town is a beautifully arranged, brilliantly produced and represents a mature artist at the top of her game. She has such good taste in music and such a keen ability to write a great hook and haunting melody, she made it look easy to write hit songs, even as her band mates were dropping dead from drug overdoses. Tragically not only did she suffer, the music suffered as their later songs without guitarist James Hynuman-Scott just don't have the punch and emotional impact. His more pure and simple guitar riffs and brilliant chords were the other part of the formula for success in their best work which is included in this and their other greatest hits album. If you don't like these songs you don't like pop rock, because this is just about as good as it gets.

October 20, 2002: This is a great compilation of the Pretenders biggest hits spanning from 1978-1988. Their biggest hits of the time are all here including "Stop Your Sobbing" (a cover version of the Kinks' hit), "Brass In Pocket", "Middle of the Road", "Don't Get Me Wrong" and "Hymn to Her". This collection easily shows why the Pretenders are such a great group. Take Chrissie Hynde's terrific voice and her edgy song writing and combine that with memorable pop/hard rock melodies and churning guitars and you have success! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
