Editorial Reviews

As with other releases in this series, BR Music stretches matters a bit to fill two CDs with single tracks by the Walker Brothers, reaching out to various international discographies, and to the Walkers' solo stuff to come up with the 45 songs -- so this is a chance to take in the John Walker solo renditions of songs such as "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" and "Kentucky Woman," and Gary Walker & the Rain's version of "Spooky." Forty-five songs may seem like overkill on the American side of the Atlantic for an act like the Walkers, who never really had that much impact. On the other hand, the Walker Brothers, either as a trio or as solo artists, were primarily a singles act (the trio only released six original albums across the 13 years of their history), so singles are the way to go in terms of an overview of their work. The latter extends to their mid-'70s reunion, making this double CD the most comprehensive look at the three singers' work. The audio quality is excellent and by advancing across the A- and B-sides, one gets a somewhat wider picture of their work and their sound than a hits compilation would offer.
