Graciously delicate, exquisitely colored, and with a hint of melancholy, The Romantic Harp is ideal for meditative late-night listening or to set the mood for intimate liaisons. Most of these pieces are by late-19th- and early-20th-century French composers, but not many are well known. In fact, the most famous may be the two non-French works: "Musetta's Waltz" from Puccini's La Bohème and Lecuona's Malagueña. So there are plenty of surprises: Marcel Gradjany's Rhapsodie, for example, is a lovely Impressionist tone painting; Carlos Salzedo's Variations on a Theme in the Ancient Style looks back to the music of the French Baroque in a series of tuneful, dancelike character pieces; and Fauré's song "Après un rêve," while the shortest work here, is the most affecting in its sweet sadness. Yolanda Kondonassis plays them all with great sensitivity; her tone is beautifully rounded, and Telarc's recording is warm and clear. Andrew Farach-Colton, Barnes & Noble
