Editorial Reviews

A German voice on this album asks, "Was ist das, Chicks on Speed?" Good question. The Chicks are an Australian, a New Yorker, and a German who met at art school in Munich, and although music is the focal point of their efforts, Chicks on Speed have become as much an industry as a band. They operate two record labels, a buzzing web site, a graphic design enterprise, and a clothing design firm, whose latest line finds them transforming Nike shoes into Adidas and vice versa. So what's all that got to do with this album? A lot, actually. Like their shoe design, a large part of the Chicks' shtick is to twist existing musical forms -- theirs and others -- into interesting new shapes, and that's exactly what happens on The Unreleases. Although it's their debut American release, this 70-minute-plus album is actually a collection of tracks from their import-only first album, along with singles, remixes, outtakes, and unreleased tracks. Much of the group's previous material was distinctly new wave -- as shown in their choice of covers here, including the Delta 5's incredible "Mind Your Own Business," the Normal's "Warm Leatherette," and no fewer than two B-52's songs -- but this album changes mood and direction with nearly every track, from pulsing disco and electro to spoken word and near-Digital Hardcore abandon. Either way, this album is way fun and the best representation of the Chicks' recorded hijinks yet. Jem Aswad, Barnes & Noble
