Barnes & Noble

One of the preeminent lyric sopranos of her generation, Barbara Bonney is as well versed in lieder and opera as she is in Baroque and modern vocal music, and this compilation album, appealingly titled The Radiant Voice of Babara Bonney, runs the gamut. Bonney's clear, well-focused voice and elegance of line are always a pleasure to behold, but the breadth of repertoire presented here highlights the soprano's remarkable stylistic versatility. Organized chronologically, the program offers samples of Bonney's many recordings, from the Baroque lute songs of John Dowland (Fairest Isle) to Mozart arias to the contemporary styles of André Previn (Diversions -- Songs) and Andrew Lloyd Webber (Requiem). Bonney has never been one to follow tradition slavishly, and this slightly off-center program displays her adventurous spirit -- especially in the two startlingly lovely Sibelius songs from Diamonds in the Snow: Nordic Songs. The high point of the album, however, is surely the previously unreleased "Presentation of the Rose" scene from Strauss' Rosenkavalier. The role of Sophie demands a young singer, and when Lucia Popp, the great Sophie of her day, reached an age at which she could graduate to the older Marschalin, she anointed Bonney her successor. This disc shows us why. Bonney, joined in the scene by soprano Susan Graham, sings Sophie's ecstatic, rapturous (and exceptionally high-pitched) music with a fervor and vocal bloom that dazzles. Magnificent! Regrettably, none of the soprano's recordings of Strauss' Four Last Songs are included here. But no matter. The Radiant Voice offers plenty of other reasons to rejoice. EJ Johnson
