Sara Groves's third major-label release finds the thoughtful singer-songwriter penning her trademark insightful tales about life and faith. This time, however, there's a lush jazz-pop polish to her concise, neo-folkie compositions. The result is beautifully engaging, full of musical intricacies (like the nifty dobro on "Esther" and the enticing viola embroidery on "What I Thought I Wanted"). Such production flourishes bear mentioning because they show that Groves has matured as a performer and writer, to the point where such things truly embellish, not distract. Not nearly as bare-bones as her first release, but lyrically more accessible and personal than her last, The Other Side of Something shows us an artist who is able to write her heart, perform with conviction, and present her songs in a way that listeners can touch. It just doesn't get better than that. Lisa Zhito, Barnes & Noble
