About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

A portrait of the artist as a young man, The Nightfly is a wonderfully evocative reminiscence of Kennedy-era American life; in the liner notes, Donald Fagen describes the songs as representative of the kinds of fantasies he entertained as an adolescent during the late '50s/early '60s, and he conveys the tenor of the times with some of his most personal and least obtuse material to date. Continuing in the smooth pop-jazz mode favored on the final Steely Dan records, The Nightfly is lush and shimmering, produced with cinematic flair by Gary Katz; romanticized but never sentimental, the songs are slices of suburbanite soap opera, tales of space-age hopes (the hit "I.G.Y.") and Cold War fears (the wonderful "The New Frontier," a memoir of fallout-shelter love) crafted with impeccable style and sophistication. The Finest of Donald Fagen's Trilogyby mosaic_heart

August 01, 2009: Thankfully when Steely Dan took a hiatus Donald Fagen presented his fans "The Nightfly." The masses were treated to the bouncy tunes of "I.G.Y" and "New Frontier" on the radio airways. "Green Flower Street" might be where Steely Dan's "Josie" frequents when she is not in her hometown. "Maxine" sets the stage for a romantic slow dance with a special someone... Speaking of "The Nightfly" the dj coos to his listeners inbetween the promos, jazz, and personal reminiscing. Donald on the cover posing as "The Nightfly is a fantastic touch. "The Nightfly" cover has been reproduced in many styles including Japanese comics art. Spoil yourself and get this cd.

June 15, 2007: After the 1980 Gaucho album and tour have been completed, Steely Dan had broken up, and this is how Donald Fagen's debut solo album, The Nightfly came to place, and it's a excellent album from start to finish, and this album also features the hit single "New Frontier", which was a music video on MTV and VH1, but this album features an arrangement by Donald Fagen on "Ruby Baby" which was wriiten by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Not only fans of Steely Dan will enjoy this album, but fans of Donald Fagen as well.
