    Editorial Reviews

Here's an unassuming acoustic masterpiece -- richly nuanced, interpretive singing and instrumental work from vocalist nonpareil Raul Malo of the Mavericks, along with three ace Nashville cats. Malo simply scorches these 11 superb tunes, his mood mirrored by guitarist Pat Flynn and mandolinist Rob Ickes, who offer spare, soulful punctuations while bassist Dave Pomeroy and percussionist Larry Castro provide discreet rhythmic underpinning. Malo rolls out his big, hearty tenor to full effect on the crying choruses of Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou," underscoring why he's often compared to the lauded country-rock soulman. Malo effectively mutes the volume in a deliberate, pulsing take on Gordon Lightfoot's winsome "Early Morning Rain," digs deep for a keening effect on the Louvin Brothers' heartbreaking "When I Stop Dreaming," and croons tenderly on two beautifully realized, swoon-inducing pop classics, "Moon River" and "I Love You for Sentimental Reasons." Similar superlatives apply to gripping versions of Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome when You Go," Hank Williams's stone country "Weary Blues from Waiting," Van Morrison's funky "Bright Side of the Road," and Gram Parsons' bristling "Hot Burrito #1." These are songs that have already endured beyond their time, and these new renderings will not soon lose their luster, either -- the smarts and heart invested here amount to a timeless calling card.
