The original Broadway cast of Meredith Willson's most successful musical was headed by Robert Preston, who played the part of Harold Hill, a conman who breezes into an Iowa town and tries to sell the inhabitants on non-existent boys band equipment. Willson concentrates on percussive effects and rapid-fire spiels for Preston, though the musical standout is Barbara Cook as Marian the Librarian. Highlights of this perennial hit show include "Seventy-Six Trombones" and "Till There Was You." William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

December 15, 2002: With a fast-talking con man, beautiful librarian (with a mother who has a brogue)and the best quartet in America in 1957, this is a recipe for magic. Robert Preston is peerless in his first musical, and absolutely dominates the recording with his superb acting/singing numbers. Barbara Cook has always had the most "I want to listen to you sing the phone book" voice on Broadway. The icing on the cake though is The Buffalo Bills barbershop quartet. Meridith Willson in interviews was quoted that The Music Man's most important part(s) is the quartet. That is why he cast them first, and he simply got the number one barbershop quartet in the country. If you only could choose one musical cd to purchase, this should be the one. Simply outstanding.
