Editorial Reviews

There are so many "classical relaxation" recordings out there that choosing one could easily stress you out. What sets this compilation apart from the quickly growing crowd is its breadth. Most albums like this steer clear of vocal music -- following the all-instrumental, all-the-time classical radio format that's favored today -- but The Most Relaxing Classical Album in the World...Ever! offers an exceptionally healthy mix of genres. So, in addition to Baroque favorites like Pachelbel's "Canon in D" you also get an exquisite vocalise for soprano and orchestra by the modern Polish composer Henryk Gorecki, the original choral version of Bach's famous "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," as well as the "Flower Duet" from Delibes opera Lakmé (made famous in British Airways's television commercials). And while everything on this two-CD set has an easy pace, some of the selections -- such as the excerpt from Elgar's "Enigma Variations" -- build to climaxes that are as stirring as they are relaxing. Serious classical collectors might be annoyed to discover that some of the pieces have been shortened to allow for greater variety overall, but there's no carping about the performances. Some of the greatest names in classical music are here, including James Galway, Jacqueline du Pré, Sir Neville Marriner, Herbert von Karajan, Montserrat Caballé, and Sir Simon Rattle. June 13, 2005: If you're having trouble sleeping, this is the CD for you. Don't buy it if you like full-orchestra passionate renditions of your favourite compositions. It makes pretty good background music for low-key dinner parties too.
