About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

The title isn't really a joke, actually. Machine Head do take some chances on their second album, The More Things Change..., expanding their brutal attack with gothic flourishes and prog rock pretensions without ever abandoning their blistering thrash metal roots. And that's good -- few bands have the appealing, gut-level visceral attack of Machine Head and The More Things Change... proves they are among the more vital metal bands of the latter half of the '90s. May 16, 2007: Few musical memories have stayed with me as long as my memory of seeing the video for the first single off of The More Things Change, the song "Ten Ton Hammer". It floored me. The music was unreal. I didn't know it got this intense, heavy, and angry. After watching the video, all I could think was these guys are the real deal. The next day I rushed to the record store & picked up the CD. It didn't dissapoint at all. Though the band sticks with the same tone throughout, not experimenting too much with gear & the sound from song to song, it doesn't matter. The riffs are monstrous, the bass thick & ever-present, the drums thunderous, and to me, this album contains Robb Flynn's strongest vocal displays on the whole. Unlike the millions of metal-core and retro metal bands on the scene these days, the band knows how to change up the tempo and feel from song to song, and even within the same song. Violate is one such piece, with a long, brooding intro & verse, epic chorus, and then a thrashfest-ending that wouldn't leave a single soul standing in the pit when the band plays it live. So do yourself a favor buy this CD, invite some friends over, set up your surround-sound home stereo system, and crank it up.
