Tales of Camelot have been circulating for centuries, but in the television miniseries The Mists of Avalon (based on the book of the same name), the arrival of King Arthur and his knights is viewed through the eyes of the powerful women behind the throne. Composer Lee Holdridge -- who wrote the music for the Academy Award-winning documentary Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport -- pumps up this score with arrangements that perfectly capture both the mythical and material worlds of this pagan age. By blending Irish folk instruments such as uilleann pipes and bodhran (a goatskin drum) with thunderous timpani, swelling choruses, and simmering string arrangements, Holdridge takes the listener from the courtship between the future king's parents ("Igaine Meets Uther/Arthur Is Born") to the passing of Arthur's mentor ("Merlin's Wisdom/Merlin's Death"). Elsewhere, blaring brass and crashing percussion paint a dramatic scenario of two brothers vying to rule England ("Mordred Confronts Arthur/The Battle Ends"). Bookending Holdridge's compelling score is Canadian chanteuse Loreena McKennitt's Gregorian-flavored reading of "The Mystic's Dream" and Holdrige's collaboration with Celtic musician Aeone on the equally otherworldly "I Will Remember You Still." The magic and mystery of this soundtrack will transport you back to a time of dungeons and dragons. Dave Gil de Rubio, Barnes & Noble
