About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Sporting spiffy mod suits and exuding late-night cool, Thievery Corporation is a Washington, D.C., duo whose ultra-suave grooves infuse digital music sheen with organic tones and earthy rhythms. After two 1999 releases on the mellow side -- an excellent DJ Kicks mix-CD and the remix collection Abductions & Reconstructions, where they worked over tracks from David Byrne and Stereolab among others -- The Mirror Conspiracy finds the duo diversifying their sound with sensual pop numbers ("Le Monde") and cinematic deep house ("The Hong Kong Triad"), alongside plenty of languid chill-out tracks. Churning Latin percussion ("Air Batucada"), blissed-out sitar-funk ("Lebanese Blonde"), and the sultry vocals of Bebel Gilberto (the daughter of bossa nova innovator Joao Gilberto) on "So com Voce" are just a few of the international touches that distinguish Thievery Corporation from their sampler-toting peers. Falling somewhere between the ethnic-electronica of acts such as Afro-Celt Sound System and the fuzzy trip-hop of Kruder and Dorfmeister, Thievery Corporation produce luscious beat symphonies for aspiring lounge lizards and globe-trotting travelers. July 13, 2004: Doesn't flow as well as "Richest Man in Babylon," but the tracks are more consistent and better. An irritation is the CD's physical design; the no-artwork top is supposed to be minimalist hip, but it can't be distinguished from the laser side, especially while driving, unless you read the mini-print around the core. This means you may very well insert it upside-down and scratch the damn thing to unplayability like I did and be forced to shell out more money to buy it again. So, write on the top with a Sharpie.

May 09, 2004: If you haven't been keeping in contact with the multi-faceted and much loved men of Thievery Corporation (Rob Garza and Eric Hilton-- no relation to THE Hiltons, sorry), you can being with this album. Not their first work, but I believe it to be their best. It samples the bossanova from abroad, and even borrow the beautiful voice of Bebel Gilberto, daughter of classic Gilberto fame (Astrud). You can think MOD for the general "theme," or you can wish this high-class album to be the soundtrack to your life. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
