The Long Road Home: The Ultimate John Fogerty/Creedence Collection is the first compilation to feature both Fogerty's classic Creedence Clearwater Revival hits and his solo recordings of the '80s and '90s. This was released on the occasion of his return to Fantasy Records, the label where he began his career, in 2005. He may have started his recording career there, but he had a bitter falling out with the label's owner, Saul Zaentz, in the '70s, which lead to lawsuits -- most notably, Zaentz sued Fogerty for plagiarizing himself -- and a self-imposed embargo on Fogerty performing CCR material, since that music evoked too many bad memories. In 2005, Zaentz was no longer with Fantasy and the label courted Fogerty with an offer, which he eventually accepted, with The Long Road Home being the first release in the new contract. Weighing in at 25 songs, this has most, but not all, of the big CCR/Fogerty songs and most, but not all, are in their original studio hit versions. A handful of songs are presented in live versions -- "Almost Saturday Night" and "Rockin' All Over the World" from his 1975 solo debut, "Bootleg," "Hey Tonight," "Keep on Chooglin'," and "Fortunate Son" -- and some of these are quite good (particularly the recent 2005 recordings). Also, there are a couple of songs that are hard not to miss -- not album tracks like "It Came out of the Sky," but charting singles like "Commotion," "Long as I Can See the Light," and "Rock & Roll Girls." That said, all these complaints amount to nitpicking, since this does have the great majority of Fogerty's best and biggest songs, and the collection is enormously entertaining. May 23, 2007: This is a terrific, and I think the best Creedence Clearwater best of. I prefer it in part because of the bonus of Fogerty's best solo material, which holds up its head well in the lofty company of his former band's greatest hits, and also because it avoids the long, jam-like tracks (Grapevine, etc.) that just are not on par with the shorter tracks from the CCR catalog. While one need not be religious about it, there is a reason that most great rock and roll songs are executed in around three minutes or less. This collection is rock solid--a real pleasure. Even a few live tracks and a scrambled sequence add to the cohesion and the enjoyment rather than detract from it. I have had the standard CCR collections, and I prefer this one. There is also a non-musical reason to get it. If you tend to believe John Fogerty, and I do, that he was ripped off and mistreated by his record co. and even fellow band-mates (I like democracy most of the time myself, but John conceived and did the conceptual theme, the lead guitar, the great songwriting, the singing, etc. all himself, for hit after hit after hit, so it was a bit silly for his band members to demand equal time, however worthy their instrumental contributions may have been) there is an extra-musical reason to buy this as well. After the long years of bitter lawsuits, including one where Fogerty was brought to court charged with stealing from songs he himself had written, the main offending higher up at CCR's label Fantasy finally left. This opened the door for smarter and cooler, if not more ethical, heads to prevail at Fantasy. After decades of not owning the music he had written and created, etc., John finally got some consideration. He was welcomed home (thus the title) at last and offered the deal of doing this collection of his old CCR and newer solo material and odd live track, making a glorious collection and long-deserved victory and vindication of sorts. Good for him. Who knows how many years the nonsense under his nemesis took off John's life, but here's hoping this puts 'em back. Thank you John--we are happy for you! M. Bazin

July 30, 2006: You'll never hear a greater voice of Rock and Roll than John Fogerty.The man has written the greatest collection of rock songs ever penned.This CD is a mixture of his days with Creedence and his solo career.It is also a mixture of studio and live recordings adding up to one of the best CDs that anyone has ever put out.The sheer number of hits and unforgettable lyrics that Fogerty has been involved with is staggering.All his best is included on this awesome CD. Also if you ever get the chance to see Fogerty in concert jump at it! The man is amazing,even at age 61 he runs all over the stage during his 2 hour show.He changes guitars frequently including using his famous Louisville Slugger guitar when he does "Centerfield".The most amazing thing about his show, however,is the energy and zeal he has when doing his songs,even though he has done them thousands of times he puts his soul into every note like he is doing the song for the very first time. When other acts with some age may go through the motions Fogerty still burns with a passion for his material.And that is evident on this great CD. If you buy only one CD this year make it this one.
