About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

There have been numerous attempts at summarizing Phyllis Hyman's career on one disc. Most have been severely flawed, whether it has come down to missing hit singles or poor selection of album cuts. And while Hyman didn't have that many chart hits (at least when compared to several of her contemporaries), there has always been the need for a double-disc compilation that goes deeper -- allowing space for all the major singles and album cuts that deserve more attention. The Legacy of Phyllis Hyman fills that void. Although it might be a little too much for the person who just wants the songs heard on the radio, it's the next best thing to having all of her studio albums (all of which are spotty in varying degrees). May 30, 2007: It seems like yesterday that I was in my car listening to the radio when I heard the news. Many people I know claim that her music was and is so sad and perhaps I'd agree with them to a degree. However, I've learned through her music a good deal about life, love, love of one's self and relationships. As an unknown Poet once said... "Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart. To handle yourself use your head and to handle others use your heart!" Though Ms. Hyman wasn't a "personal friend" I feel like I've known her most of my life and her music resonates in my mind and heart! Love and miss you much Phyllis Hyman! You've given so much to and for your fans and have earned your rest!!!

July 25, 2003: Phyliss Hyman was the one that defined the immortal soul of woman. Her songs, her music, and her abundant beauty compares to nothing else. She was as the ocean, always powerful, enchanting, and as beautiful as life itself, which is somewhat frightening to know that the ocean of death took her soul. Despite the fear, the mystery, and the shroud of in depth sadness that comes attached to the story of this artists life through every song, it brings more of an in depth power and meaning when listening to the lyrics of her music. Songs (from her last album, I Refuse to Be Lonely), and other songs before that, truly seem to come closer to her last golden tears of sorrow. Wherever she is now, the world was always calling for her as the place she is at now, where forever, the music of love will always call to her in peace.
