About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

While certainly not a household name, the late Groovy Joe Poovey first gained national attention as one of the opening acts for Elvis Presley when he appeared on the Big "D" Jamboree in the mid-'50s. Later in his career he wrote several country songs that were recorded by George Jones, Willie Nelson, Wynn Stewart, and Johnny Paycheck, to name a few. These 20 tracks, from the vaults of the Little Darlin' label, highlight both the rockabilly screamers and honky tonk weepers that Poovey easily switched between throughout his four decades of playing and writing music. The first six tracks fluctuate in quality as they were recorded live between 1959 and 1960 and also in Poovey's garage on primitive equipment. The remaining selections consist of unreleased cover tunes recorded in the early '90s, three of which were written by Poovey: "Come On Baby Let's Rock," "Ten Long Fingers," and "Don't Blame It on Me." It didn't matter what decade he recorded in or whether it was rockabilly or hillbilly, Joe Poovey put an equal amount of fervor, drive, and heart into all of it.
