Editorial Reviews

God of hellfire, king of pain, decadent darling of darksiders the world over, Marilyn Manson can be a goth-glam goofball or the most controversial crotch-rocker on earth. But he's best when he's both, as on this tumultuous live gore fest. Recorded during the midwestern leg of his Rock Is Dead tour, these scabrous performances find Marilyn slobbering his way through the heartland like a true hedonistic beast -- ripping into "Rock Is Dead," "The Beautiful People," "Antichrist Superstar," and "The Dope Show" as if he's trying to muss every blue-hair from Fargo to Fort Worth. A bit in Cedar Rapids, Michigan, where he baits intruding cops and Bible thumpers with a joyfully sarcastic "Hallelujah, motherfucker!" captures the spirit of the moment pretty succinctly. But detractors may be surprised to see that Manson can rock as well as shock. He and his booming backing band slam home their numbers in fine Frankensteinian fashion, replacing the rather tinny sound of MECHANICAL ANIMALS with a cutting metal edge that definitely gets the blood flowing. The most riveting moment here is Manson's lugubrious robo-metal rip through the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams," which segues quite nicely into the robo-punk mosh-fest Hell/Outro." A dope show indeed. Fans should note that the disc ends with a pummeling new cut, "Astonishing Panorama of the Endtimes," also found on MTV's CELEBRITY DEATH MATCH disc. Jon Dolan, Barnes & Noble

October 26, 2002: Say what you want about Marilyn Manson, but one thing that is undisputable is that he puts on a hell of a live performance. As far as live performance cd's go, it's usually just a bunch of singles grouped together, this is only half true on Manson's latest outing. He mixes singles like The Beautiful People and Lunchbox with lesser heard songs like The Last Day On Earth and The Reflecting God. Another very good thing about this album is we get to see how good of a guitarist John 5 is (he didn't play on Mechanical Animals, read the credits). Recorded very well, everything on this album is coherant to the slightest drum rattle to Manson's bone rattling screams. Among the best songs are Lunchbox, The Last Day On Earth (performed beautifully on acoustic guitar), and Antichrist Superstar (which is played at a level which will give you goose bumps). Overall, if you like Manson and you like live music, this is a shoe-in for your next purchase. If you don't like Manson and live music, get it anyway, you'll be suprised.
